F1 drivers get stuck in Lego parade chaos

Formula 1’s Lego parade became an instant British Grand Prix highlight when multiple drivers beached themselves in the Turn 1 gravel at Silverstone.

The special pre-race parade saw all 22 drivers take to the circuit in individual driveable Lego F1 minicars, but the light-hearted lap quickly turned into one of the funniest moments of the weekend.

Rather than gently cruise around Silverstone, several drivers treated the parade like an unofficial race and tried to cut the corner into Turn 1, with that plan lasting only a few metres.

Multiple cars bogged down in the gravel, leaving drivers stranded and laughing as the parade briefly descended into good-natured chaos.

In total, nine drivers and FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who was also part of the parade, found themselves stuck after the ambitious shortcut attempt.

Several drivers climbed out of their cars to help dig and push the stranded machines free, while Carlos Sainz wasted little time abandoning his own Williams-themed car altogether.

The Spaniard instead jumped aboard former McLaren teammate Lando Norris’ car and completed the rest of the lap as a passenger.

The scene delivered on the promise of last year’s Lego parade in Miami, where drivers shared team-themed cars and turned the lap into a playful demolition derby.

This year’s version was expanded for Silverstone, with each driver given their own car in team colours and carrying their race number.

Each minicar was made from more than 28,000 Lego bricks, weighed around 280kg and was capable of reaching 25km/h.

Several drivers banged wheels playfully on the lap, weaving around the circuit and performing doughnuts for the fans.

Others took a more relaxed approach and used the lap to soak up the huge Silverstone crowd.

Norris stopped in front of his own stand, packed with 16,000 fans in his trademark neon yellow, to speak to supporters and fire shirts into the crowd with a T-shirt gun.

Kimi Antonelli and Charles Leclerc also made time for those working around the circuit, stopping to high five marshals who had gathered by the side of the track to cheer on the drivers.

While not an actual race as such, Fernando Alonso ended up crossing the line first at the end of the lap, giving Aston Martin a rare highlight in their difficult 2026 season.

The British Grand Prix gets underway at 12am AEST.
